Battle Tactic #6: Recapture ground given up to the enemy, individually and as a couple

No matter how far along we are in our marriage, we all have things that control or strongly influence our thoughts, words, and actions (behaviors). Usually, the source is from some type of wounding we experienced earlier in life that caused us to shut down or strike out. (Click on the title to read the full post.)

We are also influenced by things that happened in our family of origin (mom’s and dad’s family tree).

Whenever thoughts, words, or behaviors are present that are inconsistent with God’s desire for us, we have directly or indirectly, intentionally or unintentionally, given up ground to the enemy. The Holy Spirit can reveal where that has occurred so that it can be handled, usually by the individual. There may also be ground given up by the couple based on things that have happened between them during dating, engagement, and marriage.

In faith, ask “Jesus, where have I (we) given up ground to the enemy?” Listen for what is revealed. He may bring to mind a memory, person, or event. Pay attention to what you hear, see, sense, or feel. If you are unclear, ask again. Jesus is kind, loving, and merciful. He wants to set you free and He will answer. Wait expectantly with eager anticipation. Once the issues are identified, the individual or couple can handle them by repenting, forgiving, and renouncing, as led by the Holy Spirit.
