What’s the foundation for your marriage? What is it built upon? We invite you to consider two Scriptures from the Bible as you contemplate these questions:
Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. (Psalm 127:1a)
[Jesus said] “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (Matthew 7:24-27)
A few points are worth noting. We are taking liberty to apply this parable as a metaphor that can be related to marriage, even though it refers to our life. Jesus said that if we hear what he says (for us as recorded in the Bible) and put it into practice, our (marriage) house will be on solid footing, rock solid. So, it’s not just hearing and believing, but we must do what he is telling us to do. Both hearing/believing and doing are required to have a solid foundation. Jesus also tells us that the rains (storms of life) will come, streams (difficulties) will rise, and winds will blow and beat (sometimes for a long time) against us and our marriage. But, when they do, if we are grounded in and walking out our faith in Jesus, we will withstand!
