Have you ever started to think about what life would be like if only something hadn’t happened, if only your spouse would change, if only you could have married someone else, or any other “if only” scenario? Stop! And look in the mirror. (Click on the title to read more.)

As Jesus was talking about marriage, he said, Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate. (Matthew 19:6) That “no one” includes you! So, no matter how you feel about your marriage right now, God joined you together and He doesn’t make mistakes.

  • What if you start embracing this truth that your spouse is the one God chose for you, accepting your spouse for who he or she is and how God created him or her to be?
  • What if you stop wishing for a different marriage or a different person to be married to?
  • What if you start focusing on the positives in your spouse (and marriage) and letting God take care of the negatives?
  • What if you start loving your spouse as Jesus loves you (regardless of what you do or how you respond to Him)?
  • What if you start examining how you could be a better husband or wife to your spouse?

We typically move in the direction we focus. Our thoughts direct our attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. So, if we are thinking we want something different or someone else, guess what happens? At some point, that becomes a reality. So, what would happen if you changed the way you think about your marriage and your spouse? If you are skeptical, give it your all, doing the five “What ifs” above for the next month and see what happens.

If things aren’t the way you’d like them to be in your marriage and you want it to change, seek God and look at the only thing you can control…you, your thoughts, your attitudes, your beliefs, your behaviors. It starts with you! Ask and trust God to take care of your spouse. And, by all means, pray that your spouse would draw near to God and that your marriage will become healthy and strong.
